For manager Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea, the EFL Cup promises them a chance at silverware, something that would drastically change the way fans and pundits are looking at their current season, which sees them down in 10th place in the Premier League table.
But is History on their side? Well, Chelsea have 5 Carabao Cups in their trophy cabinet, a lot less than Liverpool, who have almost double that. Chelsea’s most recent Carabao Cup final appearance was in fact against Jürgen Klopp’s side in the 2021-22 season, where they lost on penalties after a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
Chelsea’s Carabao connections
The last time Chelsea won the trophy was, looking at it now, filled with curiosities.
Their last cup victory came way back in the 2014-15 season, when a Jose Mourinho-led side beat Tottenham Hotspur - managed by Mauricio Pochettino - 2-0 with goals from John Terry and Diego Costa. It was Mourinho’s second spell at Chelsea, returning after the sacking of Rafa Benítez.
With the win, Mourinho added yet another EFL Cup to his tally, having won both the 2005 and 2007 editions of the tournament in his first spell as manager at the club.
Chelsea qualified for the next season’s UEFA Europa League by winning the match, but eventually secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League by winning the Premier League. Their Europa League place, as a result, went to Liverpool, who finished sixth in the league at the end of the season.
The Blues beat Liverpool 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final round; it was defender Branislav Ivanovic who got the extra-time winner after a 1-1 draw at Anfield, where Sterling scored for The Reds after Eden Hazard had put away an early penalty. Spurs made it past League One side Sheffield United, with a goal from Townsend and an Eriksen double squeezing past their opponents with a 3-2 scoreline.
