Andre Onana: Man Utd goalkeeper best Premier League shot-stopper data reveals

Image
Andre Onana is not the type of character to wilt when circumstances go against him. While at Ajax in 2021, Onana mistakenly popped a diuretic pill prescribed to his wife when he'd been fumbling around for some paracetamol. He was served with a nine-month doping ban. "It was incredible," he recalled, "40mg can destroy a career." Forced to watch on from the sidelines while wild accusations were flung his way, Onana held firm and only improved upon his return. The 27-year-old reached last year's Champions League final with Inter before becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in Manchester United's History in the summer. "I've come back from it," he said of his ban, "but if it happened to someone less strong mentally it would be very difficult." Onana's mental fortitude was firmly required during a testing opening few months at Old Trafford. A gaggle of goalkeeping errors, with his hands and vaunted feet, culminated in Onana lett...

Bernd Leno criticises Mikel Arteta's goalkeeper philsophy after Aaron Ramsdale decision

Former Arsenal number one Bernd Leno has hit out at Gunners boss Mikel Arteta and the way he uses goalkeepers after making the decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya. Despite Ramsdale enjoying a stellar 2022/23 that saw him named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, Arsenal signed David Raya on an initial loan from Brentford during the summer. Ramsdale initially kept his place but was dropped after the international break and has been on the bench for the last two Game s against Everton and PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League and Champions League respectively. Raya also started again in Sunday’s north London derby. Leno was replaced by Ramsdale in similar circumstances two years ago and has now said he feels sorry for his former Gunners teammate. "There were a couple of excuses I didn't understand and I have to say, unfortunately, it's more or less the same with Ramsdale. It has happened [again] after the international break. I know how [Aaron] feels,...

Mikel Arteta makes major admission about Arsenal goalkeeper situation

Mikel Arteta has revealed that he has considered substituting his goalkeeper s Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya in recent Game s. Arsenal's goalkeeper situation has been a talking point among fans ever since the club made the decision to sign the highly-rated David Raya on loan from Brentford during the summer. Aaron Ramsdale held onto the starting berth for the first four games of the Premier League season, however Raya was finally drafted in for Arsenal's clash with Everton on Sunday - a game the Gunners won 1-0 at Goodison Park. After that win, Arteta was asked by the press about the decision to start Raya ahead of Ramsdale: "The same rationale that Fabio [Vieira[ played here or Eddie [Nketiah] played instead of Gabriel Jesus. I haven’t had a single question on why Gabriel Jesus hasn’t started. He’s won more trophies than anyone, including me, in that dressing room, but they don’t. "It’s something that has been historically done like this, but I cannot have two player...
