Liverpool handed huge fitness boost ahead of Aston Villa clash

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was back in full training on Wednesday as he seeks to make his return to first-team action. The 22-year-old, who was integral to Liverpool's late resurgence last season, came off the bench in the opening fixture against Chelsea but has not been seen since after picking up an ankle problem. Jones was spotted back in training at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday and now appears set to make his comeback when Liverpool host Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday. Also present in the training session was centre-back Joel Matip, who picked up a knock last time out in the win over Newcastle United but does not seem to be suffering from any further issues. Matip's likely availability comes as an enormous boost to manager Jurgen Klopp, who has lost Ibrahima Konate to injury and Virgil van Dijk to a suspension which could be extended after he was charged for his conduct towards the referee after he was sent off against Newcastle. Erik ten Hag’s history with Man Utd target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Image
The smell of panic is pungent at Old Trafford. Manchester United have made strides in appeasing Erik ten Hag by signing a goalkeeper whose profile is more conducive with his ideals, as well as a striker the club hope can evolve into something quite special. However, injuries and an unconvincing start to the season has left the Red Devils needing more before the end of the summer transfer window, which is just days away. While defensive injuries and Rasmus Hojlund's absence mean we're yet to see anything close to United's apex this season (supporters will hope), the Red Devils are once again going to be miles off the Premier League's aristocracy should their midfield issues persist. Ten Hag's tendency to man-mark has pulled United's midfield trio all over the place, particularly in their first two Game s, with 31-year-old Casemiro left on an island with a haven of space to cover in transition. While it's unlikely that a different midfield profile would totall

Erling Haaland named 2022/23 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has been named the 2022/23 PFA Players' Player of the Year. Haaland ran riot in his first year in the Premier League, breaking the 38-game season scoring record as he found the back of the net 36 times in just 35 outings. The Norway international finishes atop a shortlist which also included City teammates Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones, as well as Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard and former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, who has departed the Premier League for Bayern Munich. "It’s an honour to win this prestigious award," Haaland told club media. "To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. "It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the Treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling. "John, Rodri, Ruben and Kevin all deserve their

Man Utd & Liverpool target uncertain of future as transfer deadline looms

Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has admitted he is unclear about what his immediate future holds in the final days of the summer transfer window. Gravenberch failed to establish himself at Bayern last season following a big money move from Ajax, where he had earned a reputation as one of Europe's brightest midfield talents. So far this season, the 21-year-old has played nine minutes of Bundesliga Football and was an unused substitute in the recent German Super Cup. Manchester United and Liverpool have both been in the market for midfielders before the end of the summer. 90min reported last Monday that Gravenberch has informed Bayern of his desire to move to the Premier League amid interest from the two north west giants. United and Liverpool each made known their preference for a loan with option to buy. Bayern have been resistant to letting Gravenberch leave at all, but would rather see a permanent sale if it comes to it. Bayern already hold interest in Manchester C

Dean Henderson to undergo medical ahead of permanent Man Utd exit

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is to undergo a medical at Crystal Palace ahead of a £20m move, sources have confirmed to 90min. The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest after failing to oust David de Gea as United's first-choice goalkeeper, making 18 Premier League appearances at the City Ground before losing out to Keylor Navas following his January arrival. Neither Henderson or Navas joined Forest on a permanent basis, with Steve Cooper's side opting to prise Matt Turner away from Arsenal to become the club's new number one. United, meanwhile, parted ways with De Gea in the summer after 12 years, but drafted in Andre Onana from Inter to take over, leaving Henderson out in the cold. 90min revealed last week that Crystal Palace had held talks with United over a deal for Henderson, who at the time had looked likely to serve as Onana's understudy for the 2023/24 season. But desperate to play first-team football, Henderson is now on

Man Utd beaten 3-0 in behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley

Manchester United fell 3-0 to Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington on Wednesday. United boss Erik ten Hag was keen to hold the Game to work on the fitness levels of his fringe players, while Burnley happily agreed after their Premier League clash with Luton Town was postponed, with Clarets manager Vincent Kompany keen to avoid losing any match fitness. While most of United's senior stars were kept out of the friendly in favour of an extra training session, there were a number of familiar faces in the United lineup that fell to defeat. Jonny Evans, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Martial were all part of the Game against what ended up being a strong Burnley side. Kompany deployed arguably his first-choice team in the first half before switching the entire lineup after the break. Jacob Bruun Larsen, Jay Rodriguez and Zeki Amdouni netted the goals for Burnley. As for United, eight of the 15 players used had neve

Conor Gallagher keen to fight for Chelsea future after Carney Chukwuemeka injury

Conor Gallagher remains determined to stay and fight for his Chelsea future after the Blues lost fellow midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka to a knee injury , 90min understands. Chukwuemeka will be sidelined for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery on an injury he picked up in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United, adding to the midfield dilemma faced by Mauricio Pochettino this season. While Chelsea have been open to offers for Gallagher, 90min understands the academy graduate is desperate to prove himself to his boyhood club and could be given the chance to do so after Chukwuemeka was sidelined. Pochettino is known to be a huge fan of Gallagher, who has started both Chelsea's Premier League Game s so far this season, and is pushing for the England international to be handed a new contract to replace his current deal, which has under two years left to run. Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are all long-term admirers of Gallagher but the 23-year-old hopes to

Man Utd's shocking away form shows Erik ten Hag has plenty of work to do

The 2022/23 season was extremely positive for Manchester United on the whole, lifting the Carabao Cup to end a near six-year wait for a competitive trophy and qualifying for the Champions League thanks to a third-place Premier League finish. Erik ten Hag imprinted his style of Football at Old Trafford, rooted out some of the deadwood in the club's squad, and restored a bit of a feel-good factor around a club who had been spiralling downhill first under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then under interim boss Ralf Rangnick. But there's no getting away from the fact that United still have issues. They are trying to solve some of those in the transfer market, drafting in Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to fill problem positions, while attempting to ship out more unwanted high earners. They are also pretty mediocre on the road, truth be told, and have demonstrated a soft underbelly time and time again - Ten Hag oh so aware that United's mentality and approach to certa

Carney Chukwuemeka injury: Progress & potential return date for Chelsea attacker

Image
The only thing that can match Chelsea's expenditure on fresh talent is the number of players they've currently got on the injury list. Sure, the Blues have spent an obscene amount of cash since Todd Boehly took the reins, but there's no doubting that they've been hard done by injuries, too. Although, it's hard to feel sympathetic for Chelsea supporters given their club's fetish for erroneous squad building. Nevertheless, it looks as if Mauricio Pochettino was dealt another blow - beyond the result itself- on Sunday as West Ham bullied the west London club into a 3-1 defeat. Carney Chukwuemeka, Chelsea's goalscorer at the London Stadium, succumbed to a knee injury before half-time and was subsequently withdrawn. The attacking midfielder is set for a period on the sidelines, with the Blues already missing an array of first-team stars such as Christopher Nkunku, Reece James and Wesley Fofana. When will Carney Chukwuemeka return from injury? The Chelsea playma

Revealed: Why Moises Caicedo transfer to Liverpool fell apart

Brighton and Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber has shed light on why Moises Caicedo joined Chelsea instead of Liverpool this summer. The Seagulls agreed a British record £111m fee with Liverpool for Caicedo's services, but the player's unwillingness to join the Reds allowed Chelsea to steal in, make a bigger offer and eventually sign the Ecuadorian for £115m. Speaking about the inner-workings of why Caicedo's move to Anfield ultimately fell through to Sky Sports News , Brighton CEO Barber stated that once the club handed negotiations over to the player and his representatives then the deal began to hit the rocks. "It was difficult because we agreed a price with Liverpool and at that point we have to hand over to the player and his agent to try and agree personal terms," Barber said. "When that process starts to break down of course we have to revert back to what's best for Brighton, and that's what we did. "We were respectful to Liverpool for as lon
