Egypt will be “cautious” with Mo Salah but double down ahead of friendly

Image
Mohamed Salah has been called up to represent Egypt this month despite Liverpool’s request for him to be omitted, and while his country’s stance remains, they claim they will be “ cautious .” The 31-year-old has not started a match since January 1 for Liverpool due to his African Cup of Nations commitments and subsequent hamstring injury. And despite a setback at Brentford and a letter from Liverpool asking him to be exempt from international duty in March, he has been called up to Egypt’s squad for their upcoming friendly . The Egyptian FA released a statement insisting it is their “right to include any professional player” in the squad, with “the issue of whether or not to include him is in the hands of the national team’s technical staff.” Egypt will meet New Zealand in the UAE as part of a friendly tournament, and their stance over Salah’s inclusion has been reiterated by board member Ehab El-Komy. Man Utd beaten 3-0 in behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley

Manchester United fell 3-0 to Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington on Wednesday. United boss Erik ten Hag was keen to hold the Game to work on the fitness levels of his fringe players, while Burnley happily agreed after their Premier League clash with Luton Town was postponed, with Clarets manager Vincent Kompany keen to avoid losing any match fitness. While most of United's senior stars were kept out of the friendly in favour of an extra training session, there were a number of familiar faces in the United lineup that fell to defeat. Jonny Evans, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Martial were all part of the Game against what ended up being a strong Burnley side. Kompany deployed arguably his first-choice team in the first half before switching the entire lineup after the break. Jacob Bruun Larsen, Jay Rodriguez and Zeki Amdouni netted the goals for Burnley. As for United, eight of the 15 players used had neve...

Arsenal star ruled out of Monaco friendly with knee injury

Arsenal have confirmed Gabriel Jesus will miss their final pre-season Game of the season, making him a doubt to face Manchester City in the Community Shield this weekend. The Gunners will finish off their summer preparations with a clash against Monaco for the Emirates Cup on Thursday night, though their Brazilian striker will play no part in the Game due to a knee problem. Arsenal clarified Jesus' absence after posting their starting XI, revealing: "Gabby Jesus misses tonight's Game due to a knee issue and will be assessed." The 26-year-old has featured in Arsenal's pre-season games against Nurnberg, MLS All-Stars, Manchester United and Barcelona, picking up a goal for his efforts. Jesus was a transformative figure in north London particularly at the start of the 2022/23 season, contributing three goals and assists apiece in his opening five Premier League games. His output dried up slightly but it meant little as Arsenal went into the World Cup break at the t...

Arsenal 0-2 Juventus: Player ratings as Gunners gift friendly win to Bianconeri

Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a second-string Juventus side in a friendly at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Mikel Arteta named a strong side, with the likes of Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Granit Xhaka back from World Cup duty, and was almost rewarded after just 40 seconds when Reiss Nelson drove infield from the left and fired narrowly wide. The Gunners quickly settled into the kind of rhythm that has defined their Premier League campaign so far, dominating possession in Juventus' half and going close once again inside the first 10 minutes when Fabio Vieira's volley forced Mattia Perin into a save. Arteta would have been hoping to see his players build up their fitness ahead of their Boxing Day meeting with West Ham, but saw his injury problems compounded when Nelson was forced off with what looked like a hamstring injury. It was one-way traffic in the first half, and Arsenal did eventually find the back of the net through Eddie Nketiah only to see the fla...
