Tom Lockyer provides health update after cardiac arrest

Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer has given an update on his condition on New Year’s Eve and thanked the people who saved his life after suffering a cardiac arrest against Bournemouth on December 16. The 29-year-old, who will see specialists in the new year to determine what his next step will be, collapsed in the 59th minute of the Premier League clash at the Vitality Stadium, resulting in the fixture being abandoned. The Welshman was discharged from hospital five days later following a successful procedure to fit an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. “I would just like to say that I am doing very well and feeling very much myself after the cardiac arrest I suffered in Bournemouth,” Lockyer wrote on social media. “The reason I’m doing so well is all down to the heroic actions of the players, staff, doctors and paramedics. “I feel thankful that this happened to me surrounded by these heroes. Erik ten Hag claims Man Utd 'over-performed' during debut season

Image
Erik ten Hag says Manchester United exceeded expectations in his first year but admitted standards have dropped in the 2023/24 season after the 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest. The Red Devils' last game of 2023 ended in misery as Nuno Espirito Santo's Forest struck twice in the second half to consign the visitors to their ninth Premier League defeat of the season. Ten Hag was once again without key first-team stars like Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Casemiro, while illness meant there was no place in the matchday squad for striker Rasmus Hojlund. Man Utd slipped to another defeat / Catherine Ivill/GettyImages Speaking after the match, Ten Hag pointed to the success of 2022/23 and said he is confident of leading a revival of United's fortunes. Ten Hag said: "It is clear we are not consistent. Every time I say it doesn't matter how we line up, we have to win, but the routines are not there because every time we have to swap. Football is quick, so

Premier League team of the year: 2023

Image
2023 proved to be a record-breaking year for Premier League players. Erling Haaland managed to break the single-season Premier League goalscoring record, Harry Kane managed to score in the most number of games during a single season, and Tottenham and Sheffield United players managed to break the record for most yellow cards in a single game. And after all those records came tumbling down in 2023, we at 90min have decided to pick out Premier League team of the year. GK: Alisson Becker (Liverpool) Best in the world / Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/GettyImages Dubbed the "Pele of goalkeepers", and in 2023 it was very easy to see why. Alisson Becker was undoubtedly Liverpool's most consistent performer throughout the year, saving the Reds time and time again. He's a big reason why Liverpool are back to being genuine title contenders heading into 2024. Anthony Martial injury: Progress & potential return date for Man Utd striker

Image
We're creeping into 2024 yet we're still talking about Anthony Martial as a Manchester United player. Lunacy. For a club whose desperate need for a supposed 'overhaul' has been documented time and time again over the past decade, it's pretty remarkable that a player who promised so much but contributed little remains on the club's books. Perhaps there's still hope that Martial's projected Ballon d'Or form will come to pass. Sure, it hasn't been all bad for the Frenchman in Manchester, and there genuinely was a time either side of the COVID-19 pandemic when Martial was a leading protagonist for the Red Devils. However, as Martial drifts into his ninth year at Old Trafford, the forward's career has declined into obscurity. So much so that barely anyone has noticed his recent absence. For those still keeping track, here's the latest fitness updates on a player with more Premier League goals for Manchester United than David Beckham ever man

X reacts as Chelsea almost blow three-goal lead at Luton

Festive Premier League Football ? At Kenilworth 'The Kenny' Road? Oh, what a treat. Saturday's lunchtime kick-off between Luton Town and Chelsea ticked all the boxes of a Premier League classic, and we were oh so nearly treated to one of the most remarkable comebacks in English football. Way to ruin it, Chelsea. It wasn't an easy day to start with for Luton. After 12 minutes, Chelsea found the lead. Cole Palmer intercepted a poor pass from the back by Issa Kabore, taking advantage with a fine strike. Man Utd, Liverpool & Real Madrid warned over Antonio Silva

Image
Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has warned suitors of centre-back Antonio Silva that the 20-year-old will not be allowed to leave the club this winter. 90min understands Manchester United and Liverpool have both sent scouts to watch Silva alongside midfield teammate Joao Neves, while reports in Spain have named Real Madrid as an interested party after David Alaba's ACL injury left them in a major injury crisis. Neves is understood to be holding talks over a contract extension with Benfica but Silva, whose current deal contains a €100m (£88m) release clause, has been tipped to leave in January by a handful of reports across Europe. In response to suggestions either Neves or Silva could leave, Schmidt made it clear that Benfica will not be picking up the phone this winter. "I talk to them every day, all of them," he told a press conference. "We're in the middle of the season, we have big goals with Benfica. "Of course we're not going to let these players l

Tottenham vs Bournemouth - Premier League: TV channel, team news, lineups and prediction

Image
Tottenham's 2023 concludes on New Year's Eve as they welcome a red-hot Bournemouth to north London. Gameweek 20 represents the start of the second half of the 2023/24 campaign with these two sides having already faced off back in August. Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison were on the scoresheet in a comfortable 2-0 away win. The iteration of Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth that rocked up that day paled in comparison to their current resurgent selves. No team has picked up more Premier League points than the Cherries in their last six outings (16). Given Tottenham's extensive injury list and the importance of many players absent this weekend, you wouldn't put it past Bournemouth to continue their rich vein of form. Here's 90min's preview of the New Year's Eve clash in N17. What time does Tottenham vs Bournemouth kick-off? Location : London, England Stadium : Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Date : Sunday 31 December Kick-off Time : 14:00 GMT / 09:00 ET / 06:00 PT

Since when has the Premier League played on December 30, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day?

The Premier League fixture schedule is generally pretty relentless during the festive period and 2023 has been no different. Between Thursday 21 December and Tuesday 2 January, there are only two days with no scheduled English top-flight fixtures - Christmas Day and today, Friday 29 December. Manchester City agree deal to sign Argentina wonderkid Claudio Echeverri from River Plate

Image
Manchester City have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign Claudio Echeverri from River Plate for €25 million ($28m). The Argentine talent will stay with River for another year on loan as part of the deal with the reigning European champions. The 17-year-old has been on the radar of many top European teams in recent months and his brilliant performances at the U-17 World Cup with Argentina have only added to the interest. Barcelona and Real Madrid were both interested in acquiring his services. The year began with his first professional contract for two years with River Plate until December 2024 with a clause of €25 million, a sign of his performances at underage level as he had not yet made his debut with the first team. Then came the South American U-17 Championship in April, his debut with River in June, and, finally, the U-17 World Cup with Argentina. Full screen Claudio Echeverri with his Argentina team-mates.
