Anthony Martial injury: Progress & potential return date for Man Utd striker

We're creeping into 2024 yet we're still talking about Anthony Martial as a Manchester United player. Lunacy.

For a club whose desperate need for a supposed 'overhaul' has been documented time and time again over the past decade, it's pretty remarkable that a player who promised so much but contributed little remains on the club's books. Perhaps there's still hope that Martial's projected Ballon d'Or form will come to pass.

Sure, it hasn't been all bad for the Frenchman in Manchester, and there genuinely was a time either side of the COVID-19 pandemic when Martial was a leading protagonist for the Red Devils. However, as Martial drifts into his ninth year at Old Trafford, the forward's career has declined into obscurity. So much so that barely anyone has noticed his recent absence.

For those still keeping track, here's the latest fitness updates on a player with more Premier League goals for Manchester United than David Beckham ever managed.

An array of injuries saw Martial miss 27 Games last season as he made just 19 appearances during Erik ten Hag's debut season.

The former Sevilla loanee has so far stayed injury-free in 2023/24, but he's missed Man Utd's last four Games through illness. Before falling ill, Martial had notched a meagre 444 Premier League minutes, scoring once.

It's certainly rare for a professional athlete to miss several weeks of action due to an illness, and Ten Hag confirmed ahead of United's trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday that Martial remains unavailable.

“He’s unwell, he’s not available," the Dutchman said.

There have been very few details regarding Martial's illness, with some speculating that alternate factors have kept the Frenchman out of action since United's 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on 9 December.

The 28-year-old forward has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and will almost certainly leave the club in 2024. His current absence means that if a buyer manifests in the January transfer window, Martial may have already played his last game for Man Utd. Should he still be on the club's books come the start of February, Martial is likely to make his exit on a free transfer in the summer.
